Kenya shines at Wanda Diamond League Finals in Zurich
They say winning doesn’t really mean coming in first in a race. Real victory is arriving at the finish line with no regrets because you know you've gone all out, at that moment you gave it your all, and tonight at Zurich Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Timothy Cheruiyot did just that.
Faith Kipyegon, double 1500m Olympic and world champion won her first diamond league trophy tonight since 2017. In a thrilling and mind-blowing sprint finish, Faith Kipyegon battled it out with Sifan Hassan in the last 300m to win the race in 3.58.33. Most likely another win Faith will definitely dedicate to her number one fan, her daughter. Sifan Hassan clocked 3.58.55 to finish second. What a thrill to experience these two champions battle it out.
Timothy Cheruiyot won his fourth diamond league trophy in yet another thrilling battle between Cheruiyot and his strongest competitor Jakob Ingebrigtsen. Norwegian’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen who won the Tokyo Olympics after beating Timothy for the first time came close but Cheruiyot battled it out to the finish line to win the race in 3.31.37. Jakob clocked 3.31.45 to finish second in the heated race that brought fans in the Letzigrund stadium in Zurich up on their feet.
Thank you Faith and Timothy, and all our athletes for running Kenyan and for your resistance, indomitable spirit, and strength!
