The Running News
They say Nairobi is the city under the sun, no doubt about it. What a heated weekend it has been that saw the World athletics U21 championship coming to an end after a successful 5-day event that showcased the depth of talent we have in our young athletes. Kenya bagged 16 medals to retain the overall title. It’s clear now more than ever that the future in this sport is in good hands. Congratulations to the young and rising stars from across the globe.
World Athletics U21 Championships
Eight Gold medals, one silver medal, and seven bronze medals for Kenya’s best performance in 11 years at the world junior event. Kenyan athletes brought the heat in the competitions, first up was Benson Kiplagat who won gold in the men’s 5000m clocking a personal best of 13.20.37, Levy kibet also bagged bronze in the same race. The sunny afternoon was quite a thrilling one with Teresia Muthoni winning the 3000m to get us our second gold medal and Zena Jemutai adding a silver medal in the same race. Then followed the 17-year-old star, Wanyonyi who proved Kenya’s dominance in the 800m race by winning yet another Gold. Up next was the battle of supremacy between Kenya and Ethiopia where purity Chepkirui won the 1500m battle. The young stars made us very proud and we are excited to see what the future holds.
Faith Kipyegon keeps breaking records
Faith is perhaps the living proof that if you work hard and believe in yourself then there’s very little that is truly impossible. Faith Kipyegon set a new meet record at the diamond league this weekend. In a thrilling race that saw Kipyegon finish strong and re-energized like it was the beginning of another race she too was happy with her outstanding performance. Thank you Faith for always flying our flag high.
A new steeplechase king is born
Amos Serem, remember this name, mark it somewhere because you’ll certainly be seeing it more on your screens in the coming days.
The young star brought back memories of steeplechase legend Ezekial Kemboi by destroying the field to win the 3000m race. During the race, a few metres to the finish, Serem is seen calming down the crowd as he speeds off to finish strong and bag Kenya another Gold medal. He then showcased the famous ‘Kemboi’ dance.
We can only say one thing, the throne is yours, King, take over already.

Thomson Hera storms 100m race in Eugene
Elaine Thompson had a magnificent weekend in Eugene where she clocked the second-fastest time ever. The Jamaican star who ran 10.61s in the recently concluded Tokyo Olympics blazed to victory with a stunning 10.54s. When asked if she could beat Griffith-Joyner, the only woman to have clocked a faster time in 1988 who set a world record of 10.49s this is what she had to say“I have so much more in me, so yes, it’s possible’’.
Sifans world 5,000m record attempt falls short
The 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic champion who was aiming to beat the record set by Letensbet Gidey in 2020 fell short of this dream but still went ahead to record a season-best at the Prefontaine Classic this weekend. She explained in an interview that in her two last laps she knew she was not going to beat the 5000m record but still wanted to finish strong.
Sasha Zhoya sets record on African soil
19-year-old Frenchman broke the men’s U20 110m hurdles world record two times in 24 hours to claim the title at the world athletics championships in Kenya this weekend. Zhoya who ran 12.72s to claim gold improved his semi-final time by 0.21 seconds. This is what he had to say after his win “I’m very happy, the job is done since last year it was the Objective I gave myself,”
Jamaica and SouthAfrica shutter world U20 records in 4x100m
The South African relay team bagged gold on the final day of the competitions in Kenya and went ahead to clock an impressive 38.51 beating the U20 world record in the process.
The Jamaican powerhouse on the other handled by Serena Cole, Tina Clayton, Kerrica Hill, and Tia Clayton put up quite a show to smash the previous record set by Germany 4 years ago to win gold and set a new world record of 42.94 in the 4x100 women’s race.
Athing mu smashes 800m record
The sensational19-year-old Tokyo Gold medalist, Athing Mu had a splendid weekend at the diamond league where she set a new American record. The rising star who had her personal best in Tokyo less than a month ran a competitive race to smash the 800m record. No doubt now that Athing Mu is the new star of the 800m race.
