Angela Tanui Clocks Fastest Time on Italian Soil

It was another Kenyan triumphant weekend, this time at the 2021 Xiamen Siena Tuscany Elite Camp Marathon where Angela Tanui and Eric Kiprono emerged victorious.

In the women’s race, Angela clocked 2:20:08 to run the fastest women’s marathon ever in Italian soil to demolish the old record of 2:22:25.

A group of 13 athletes featured in the women’s lead group. By 30km, four athletes were breaking away - Angela Tanui, Gladys Chepkirui and Delvine Meringor, plus Gedamu. Tanui eventually broke away, continuing with the lead to win by more than two-and-a-half minutes from her compatriot Purity Changwony, who came through to finish second in a PB of 2:22:46.

In the men’s race, a large group of 26 were together through half way. With less than 5km remaining Eric Kiptanui and Ethiopia's Abdi Fufa Nigassa made a move. Kiptanui kicked ahead to win by 10 seconds from Nigassa to finish 2:05:57, his new personal best. Kiptanui achieved the second-quickest men’s time ever run on Italian soil. Thirteen athletes ran under 2h08.

Since the Xiamen Marathon couldn’t have an international field, they helped host this race on a circuit of about five kilometers in the municipal airport of Sovicille outside Siena. It was set as European Olympic Marathon Qualification Race. Which seems to be a bit of a theme…

NN Mission Is Sunday, At An Airport

This Sunday NN Mission Marathon will take off from a specially designed course on Twente Airport which will be closed for the general audience. Deja Vu: not just from Siena, but there was the airport run in Prague last year.

Eliud Kipchoge leads a contingent of Kenyan talent including Gladys Chesire, Felix Chemonges, Laban Korir, Jonathan Korir and Augustine Choge.

There will be 12 pacemakers in the field including Victor Chumo who helped Kipchoge to his historic sub-two-hour-run in Vienna in October 2019.

This Olympic qualifying event will be live on SuperSport Variety 3 from 10.00EAT for Sub Saharan Africa and on FloSports for USA, Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia.

Naibei Wins in Lagos

Emmanuel Naibei is the winner of the 2021 Lagos City Marathon. The men race was compact with the leading pack having 8 athletes until after the first half. Robert Kipkemboi took command of the race opening the gap and looked primed for victory. But then he hit the wall and faded fast.

Emmanuel Naibei, running smart in the 28C / 83F heat, caught up with him and took the lead which took him to his first victory in Lagos in a time of 2:11:37. Kipkemboi finished fourth.

In the women’s race Kenya’s Celestine Chepchirchir finished second behind winner Ethiopian Meseret Dinke.

The famed playful relationship between Kenya and Nigeria then played out on Twitter as Nigerians mourned being bested yet again.
